Description
At the start of The School in the Woods Toby Barrett, the heroine ofThe School on the Moor, finds that St Githa’s – the eponymous school of that book – is closing unexpectedly; the headmistress, who also owns the school, is getting married and moving to New Zealand, and has arranged for all those pupils who wish to do so to transfer to Thatches, a school run by a friend of hers.
How the ‘Githites’ adjust to the ways of another school, become friends with its pupils and discover the delights of a woodland rather than a moorland area, and in particular the way in which Toby herself adapts to being a boarder rather than a day girl, all make for another enjoyable story from Dorita Fairlie Bruce. And, like its predecessor, it has an element of mystery woven into the plot which adds to the excitement of Toby and her friends’ first term at Thatches, ‘the school in the woods’.
