Description
Four years before this book opens, Nancy Caird left St. Bride’s after only one term. Now, at seventeen, she goes back to make good, and with her goes her fair-haired friend, Desdemona Blackett. Up at St. Bride’s, on an island off the west coast of Scotland, Nancy meets many of her old friends, but unfortunately Miss Caldwell, the old headmistress, has had a nervous breakdown, and her place is temporarily taken by Miss Warren, more often known as the ‘Locum’. Freedom-loving Laurie Sims is the present head-girl, and she has definite ideas on how St. Bride’s should “move on with the times”. She is encouraged by Miss Warren, who wishes to try out her theories on child psychology, but the result is not quite what either of them expect. There are many amusing and exciting incidents before finally, in a Glasgow Art Gallery, Nancy and Desda meet Miss Caldwell, and she tells them she is going to return to St. Bride’s next term.
