Gay from China at the Chalet School

Author: Elinor M. Brent-Dyer

Publisher: Girls Gone By

Date: 2007

Pages: 265

Format: Paperback

Series: Chalet School, number 18

Description
Gay from China at the Chalet School is the 18th title in the Chalet School series . The book was originally 240 pages long. When it was published in paperback by Armada as Gay Lambert at the Chalet School the text was brutally cut to just 175 pages and whole chunks of text were left out. Now at last the story has been restored to its original length and the missing portions of text have been restored.

This is the book in which Miss Bubb comes as temporary headmistress, and it tells the story of her tyrannical rule, of Jacynth Hardy's first term, and of how Joey deals with the situation in her own inimitable way. This is also the book in which Sybil causes Josette serious injury and Katherine Bruce, author of Peace Comes to the Chalet School, has written a short story, Sybil's Darkest Hour, which tells the story of this episode.

The back cover of this edition reads:

“How Gay Lambert fought and won her battle against a school tyrant is told in this latest volume of the Chalet School Series. Gay had a stout heart but a kind one, and did much to cheer the path of her friend Jacynth Hardy. Without a doubt the reader will agree with the girls of the Chalet School in making ‘Gay from China’ the deserving winner of the Margot Venables Prize for ‘the girl who has done most to help other people.”

As well as the complete text of the first edition, this book also includes a brief biography of Elinor Brent-Dyer, the full publishing history of the story, a complete listing of all the Chalet School titles and the aforementioned short story. Girls Gone By have also supplied a photograph of the ‘real' door through which Gay left the School that night..!!
