Evelyn Smith (1885 - 1928) was a professional authoress and was able to maintain herself entirely by her writing. Almost all the other female school story writers of this period were either supported by family members or resorted to some sort of paid employment such as teaching.

Hilary Clare wrote a quite comprehensive biography of Evelyn Smith for Folly Magazine and as it is not easy to locate on the internet I have provided a link to it here:
